Cover slide in a pitch deck: purpose, rubric and three fixes

Last verified: October 20, 2026

The cover slide of a pitch deck names the company, says in one line what it does and shows how to reach you. It is the first thing an investor sees and the only slide every reader reaches, so it should state the category and the customer instead of a slogan.

What this slide is for

The cover sets the frame for the minutes that follow. A deck can be forwarded without a note, so the cover has to explain on its own what the company is.

What the rubric looks for

The getfund rubric v1 does not score slides one by one. It scores dimensions across the whole deck, and this slide supplies evidence for the ones below.

  • Design and readability, getfund rubric v1, score 3: Consistent styling, one main idea on most slides, legible charts; at most two overloaded slides
  • Design and readability, getfund rubric v1, score 5: As 4, and the deck reads without a presenter: every slide is understood in a few seconds

Three fixes

  1. Replace the slogan with one line that names the customer and what the company does.
  2. Put an e-mail address and the website on the cover so the deck can be answered without searching.
  3. Add the round and the month, so the reader knows which version this is.

A template sentence

Fill the brackets with your own confirmed facts. Do not copy the sentence as written, and do not invent a figure to fill a gap.

[Company] helps [specific customer] to [do a task] with [how it works in a few words].

The check that applies

getfund rubric v1, Contact details (2 points): An e-mail address, website or phone number anywhere in the deck

The contact check looks for an e-mail address, a website or a phone number anywhere in the deck, so a cover that carries one passes it at once.

Frequently asked questions

Should the cover show a logo and a tagline?
A logo is fine. Replace a tagline that could belong to any company with a line that says what you do and for whom.
Do I need contact details on the cover?
The check accepts them anywhere in the deck. The cover is the slide every forwarded copy keeps, so it is the safest place.
Does the cover count in the page count?
Yes. In the page-count check it is a page like any other.
